Advantages
Prosthesis have given a new meaning to life for amputees by giving them the almost total mobility and function of their limbs back, which could have forever been lost. They are given the freedom of movement, confidence, and independence back. Just as well, the advancements of prosthesis have led to the innovation of the 3D printer, that can create a low cost prosthetic for those who can not afford a more expensive one. Prosthesis have expanded in their development of artificial limbs. There are prosthetic hands, arms, breasts, facial features, etc. There are also a range of different prosthesis. For example if you are an athlete there are many prosthesis that can fit to your needs. If you are Olympic runner they have whats called flex-foot cheetahs that allow you to spring, run, and jump. The creation of breast prosthesis have opened a new door for breast cancer survivors. There are prosthetic bras which contain removable prosthetic breasts The development of prosthesis has given back the ability walk, run, climb, participate in sports, and swim to many. Disadvantages There can be disadvantages depending on what material your prosthetic is made out of. If the prosthesis is made out of metal it may be hard adjusting to the weight of your artificial limb. The price of the prosthetic and physical therapy can also be costly. The mending and maintenance of your prosthetic may be required, so that you purchase a prosthetic that is a perfect fit. Another disadvantage of the prosthetic is that it doesn't provide the sensation you once had. Even though the innovation of prosthesis has benefited many amputees when it comes to functionality, it can take a mental toll on a person. There will be tough times when trying to learn how to function the lost limb. |
